Jez & Andy from Doves

Doves are a unique band. Coming from a background in dance music (as the band Sub Sub), they applied their sensibilities in that genre to create a wholly original sound as a rock and roll band. Doves know how to make moody, ambient music. But what they've become masters at is taking their soundscapes and turning them into warm, full rock songs. Their debut, Lost Souls, was the beginning of Doves honing their sound. For example on Last Broadcast, the band is tight and focused; a killer intro preps you for something astonishing, and when "Words" blasts in, it delivers. A clever riff enhanced by lush, rich production and a distinct tone of optimism, "Words" leaves most gloomy Britpop bands in the dust (Travis and Starsailor, pack your things). Jez and Andy's Dj set will surprise you; they have an eclectic love of music which shines across the decks to the dancefloor.

Dave Haslam

Legendary DJ and acclaimed music writer Dave Haslam made his reputation DJ-ing over four hundred and fifty times at the Hacienda club in Manchester; he was a resident DJ from 1986 to 1990, during the Madchester years, and again in 1996 and 1997 (including what turned out to be the last night of the club in June 1997).

He made his debut at the Hacienda on May 1st 1986 on a night named 'the Temperance Club'. Playing an eclectic mix - from the Velvet Underground to the Beastie Boys - his Hacienda night became the focus for Madchester's indie dance fraternity. Ian Brown, Tim Burgess and the Chemical Brothers have all credited the night as an inspiration. In 1989 it was described as "the best club night in Britain" by the 'NME'.

In 1989 and 1990 he was invited by the Stone Roses to open their shows at Alexandra Palace, Blackpool and Spike Island.

Between 1990 and 1995 he hosted 'Freedom' on Saturdays at the Boardwalk in Manchester. A quality night with a hugely loyal following, 'Freedom' was to prosper for five years; Haslam played every week - with occasional guest DJ's (including Pete Heller, Pete Tong, and Erick Morillo).

He played himself in the film 'Twenty Four Hour Party People' and has made numerous TV and radio appearances. His first book, 'Manchester, England', was published in 1999, his second book, 'Adventures on the Wheels of Steel; the Rise of the Superstar DJs' was described by Scotland's 'The List' magazine as "the best book on the superstar DJ phenomenon to date". His third - 'Not Abba; the Real Story of the 1970s' was published in June 2005. Since March 2006 he has hosted a show, 'The Weekender', on Manchester's new Xfm station, broadcasting every Friday from 6pm-9pm.

The LazySunday DJ

'music to drink beer to'

First started DJ’ing back in 1986 with a homemade suitcase deck bought by his folks. He spent the next 4 years doing mobile discos wherever and whenever he could. He also was the warm up DJ for a popular teen club night in his Essex hometown (well, he was young himself).

At college, he was part of the popular radio station, RADIO 131 where he had his own show. Other interests came into focus, as they do, and so the DJ’ing slowly took a backseat.

Fast forward 10 years and armed with a case full of funky retro tunes, Jim secured a try-out at Timepiece Nightclub in Exeter where he was living at the time. One successful evening later (due in no small part to a passing GoGo dancer who stepped up on stage and shimmied for 3 hours) Jim had a residency on his hands. For next 14 months, ably assisted at times by his best mate Paulo, he played to a regular band of retro lovin’ Devonians.

It started out as a funky Hammond fuelled trip through Cool Britannia with detours into (sixties) R&B, soundtrack favourites, kitsch, garage & psych, Mod and a bit of Northern Soul. Currently, sets also encompass indie, Britpop, Balearic chillout and the odd mash-up or two. You can expect a fair few classics (Kinks, Stones, Beatles) as well.
