ECHOBELLY'S SONYA AND GLENN JOIN BRAVE MUSIC

We are thrilled as as thrilled can be to introduce former Echobelly stars Sonya & Glenn to Brave Music. They are bringing their wonderful acoustic set of new songs and Echobelly hits to a stage near you very soon.

This is the first time they will be touring in over four years. With the last two Echobelly albums released through their own label, their style of songwriting expressed a leaning away from the stomp and glory of the Britpop sound. The new songs hint toward the same expressions of consciousness but as always with Glenn's trademark skill in composing melodies and Sonya's unique lyrical insights

Sean Penn in line for Howard Marks movie

by James McCarthy, Wales On Sunday

HOLLYWOOD hellraiser Sean Penn could have a role alongside Rhys Ifans in the film of former drug dealer Howard Marks’ life.

The one-time Mr Madonna has been in discussions with the former international dope peddler about getting involved in the film.

It is unclear at this stage whether the Oscar winning actor and director’s role would be in front of or behind the cameras.

Oxford-educated Marks, who spent seven years in the USA’s tough Terre Haute prison after his marijuana empire was busted, is himself set to appear in the movie, playing his own father.

The 63-year-old, from Kenfig Hill, Bridgend, said: “Sean Penn’s on board in some way, but I honestly have no idea in what respect.

“He has come and had meetings about the film.

“At that meeting he didn’t promise anything other than to help in whatever way possible.

“We met up with him in London; I’ve not shown him the delights of Wales. But if he is on board he will be coming down.”

Marks promised Twin Town legend Ifans he could play him when they first met 12 years ago.

He said: “When I first met him, in 1996, when I went to see the Super Furry Animals in Pontypridd town hall, Rhys was at that time sleeping on (SFA drummer) Dafydd Ieuan’s floor. He hadn’t made it at that time. He came up to me and gave me a pack of skins and said ‘Would you sign this?’ and I said ‘Yeah, sure.’

“I did, and gave it back, and he looked back in disgust and said, ‘No I mean every one,’ so that bonded me to him.

“We got drunk together and he said he would be a very good actor one day and could he play me in a film.”

VINNY PECULIAR & THE BLUE POPPIES OF AMBROSIA

I’m looking for gigs end of May, all of June for Vinny Peculiar & The Blue Poppies of Ambrosia. Support slots or headliners...anything!

The band have been getting lots of play on 6Music, and check out their new video ‘Uniform’ here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYbhpQVJSeM

Release date May 26 th 2009

Vinny Peculiar , former Smiths collaborator, Bill Drummond associate and Manchester’s Tony Hancock of pop has a new record coming out; it’s called ‘Sometimes I feel like a King’. Eleven songs, ten originals and one cover. Sonically akin to a British Eels with the literate elements of a Pulp or Baby Bird ‘Sometimes I feel like a King’ has ballads that break legs instead of hearts [Nurse of the Year], foot stompers dressed to impress [Uniform], and a song that blames the fashion business for anything and everything, including anorexia nervosa [To hell with Fashion]. The title track is aplaintive Neil Young style piano driven ballad, intimate, personal and forgiving. ‘Women and Men’ is possibly his finest mixed up love song.

Produced by Rob Ferrier [Clinic, Space], guitars are loud and angular, pedals steel and jumbo’s glisten from lashings of analogue fairy dust. The joyous country tinged romanticism of ‘Actions Speak Louder’, the brazen self aggrandisement of ‘Success’ and the topsy turvy wordplay of ‘Blind Mans Bluff’ bare testimony thus.

‘Sometimes I feel like a King’ is a perfectly fearless little record and a resounding return to form from one of the UKs most idiosyncratic talents.

A new UK band tour is scheduled for May 2009 with more media tbc

Goldie Lookin' Chain DJs Rhys and Eggsy joing Brave Music!

Goldie Lookin Chain are a direct result of the coming together of several of Newport’s most twisted minds. The concepts and ideas have been constantly banded around in various guises since as far back as 1983. Early experiments carried out by founder member Chon Ben-Wa Balls aka Mr. Love Eggs aka Eggsy involved the use of ‘Studio Recorder 60’, a portable tape recorder to record favourite dialogue from television shows which was then overdubbed using a myriad of Eggsie’s favourite swear words.

Thirteen years later, co-founder and beatmeister extraordinaire Dwayne Xaine Zedong aka Rhys began creating electronic music with his ‘Rave Generator’. This device enabled Dwayne to master the principles of sequencing beats and soon a collaboration of the two minds came to pass after a chance meeting in the car park of a deserted college.

GLC are gearing up for a huge UK tour, they are in discussions about a GLC movie, and Rhys and Eggsy have moved into the world of radio and TV presenting. The Newport legend continues, you knows it

8th March at The Deaf Institute in Manchester

The Durutti Column return with a new album Love In The Time of Recession, due out on April 20, 2009, the second to feature new vocalist Poppy Roberts who also plays electric piano on severalof the tracks.

The album opens with the 'In Memory of Anthony' which is inspired by Reilly's long friendship with Factory Records impresario, Tony Wilson who died in 2007. 'He always encouraged me to follow my instincts,' says Reilly. 'And that's still how I work. All the new songs are a very true reflection of my life and that's all I want any album to be.'

'Wild Beast Tamed' is one of several tracks co-written with Reilly's girlfriend, Poppy Roberts who also partly inspired the title of the album (a romantic nod to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel, Love In The Time Of Cholera).

However, Reilly's long-term friendships with Bruce Mitchell (himself the subject of an instrumental tribute, 'For Bruce'), Keir Stewart and Laurie Laptop were just as important in making the album possible. 'Without all of them I don't know how I would be able to carry on, on any level,' explains Reilly. 'And as musicians there's no one else I would rather work with.'

It's now 30 years since Factory Records released the band's debut album The Return Of The Durutti Column in 1979. Produced by Martin Hannett, this edgy, primitive LP showcased Vini Reilly's 'honey wrapped in sandpaper' guitar playing and set the tone for a career of meditative and fearless music. Reilly has drawn on influences as diverse as Fats Waller, ambient and heavy metal; experimented with samplers and chamber music, and collaborated with other Manchester luminaries such as Morrissey and Peter Hook from New Order.
